LSU Eunice has released its first mobile application. The free app can be downloaded from the App Store for iPhones or iPads, or from Google Play for Android devices.

The new LSUE myMobile app will enable smartphone users to view upcoming campus events, campus news, the campus directory, social media updates, photos, and videos. Other features include direct access to students' myLSUE and myCourses.

Access to the LeDoux Library and a direct link to campus security are also features of the new app.

The app will also give prospective students a means to easily apply for admission to the University.

The app was developed completely in-house by the LSU Eunice Office of Information Technology.

Developing a mobile app is an important step forward for the University. According to a recent study published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, 89 percent of college students own a smart phone, and 84 percent of those students use their phone for school related work. The app is designed to give students access to key information on the devices that they use most frequently.

To download the LSUE myMobile app, visit the App Store or Google Play .

Students Win Scholarships

Three LSU Eunice students who are members of the Student Support Services Program won a total of $ 2,500 in scholarships at the 2014 Annual Student Leadership Conference. The Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP) sponsored a conference earlier this semester in Hawkins, Texas.

The winners included two $1,000 scholarships recipients (Kyle Kaamil of Rayne and Brent Swann of Eunice). One $500 scholarship awarded to Travontae' Robinson of Baton Rouge. Also attending the Student Leadership Conference from LSU Eunice were Erilyn Adams of New Iberia; Jeremy Gallien of Opelousas; and Jontre Mitchell of Jeanerette.

The Conference was opened to students who were participants of either a pre-college (Upward Bound or Educational Talent Search) grades 9-12 or collegiate level (Student Support Services) TRIO programs. LSUE's participants competed with TRIO students from five regional states including Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Students who chose to compete had to write three essays based on the conference theme: Bigger, Faster, Stronger ‘Equipping Leaders of Tomorrow'. Essays had to address each of the theme's three components (i.e., Bigger, Faster, Stronger) relating to their personal experiences and leadership abilities. In addition, the students had to obtain a letter of recommendation to accompany their application.

Attendees were not required to write essays to participate in the conference; however, the LSU Eunice's participants were required to by the Student Support Services personnel.

"It was the first week of class, and I hadn't written anything in my English class yet and I had to write three essays to go," said Robinson.

Upon return, students must also serve on the SSS Student Advisory Council to put into practice their newly acquired leadership skill sets.

"Such requirements were mandatory to set and communicate high expectations," said Dr. Janice Nix-Victorian, Student Support Services Trio program director. "SLC was our first leadership conference, and I wanted our students to experience the principles of leadership regardless of the scholarship results. As a campus community, we are extremely proud of each of them for taking the challenge."

The students enjoyed a well-structured weekend of jammed packed innovative workshops. They also participated in interactive group activities and had the opportunity to discover their resiliency and leadership skills, develop professional skills, understand the importance of networking, and engage in a community of practice for social integration among their peers.

LSU Eunice's SSS TRIO program is proposed to serve first-generation, low-income and or disabled students in their retention and graduation efforts by providing tutorial services, transfer services, academic counseling, etc. For more information or to find out if you qualify, contact our main office at 337-550-1206.

After a career in higher education spanning 45 years, LSU Eunice Chancellor William J. Nunez III has announced his retirement.

"It has been a sincere honor and privilege to serve LSU Eunice - its students, faculty and staff - and to work for LSU, my alma mater, over the past 19 years," Nunez said. "And, of all that has been achieved at LSUE during this time, the most important achievement has been the numbers of students who have personally grown, developed and succeeded as the end-result of their LSUE education and experience. In fact, over my 45 years in higher education, next to my wife and family, playing a role in student learning and achievement has always been one of the greatest sources of joy in my life!"

Nunez, who began as chancellor at LSUE in 1996, will remain at LSUE through the fiscal year, and LSU will conduct a national search for the next chancellor.

"We are grateful for the leadership that Chancellor Nunez has provided in bringing LSUE to where it is today, and LSU thanks him for his many contributions over the years." said LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander. "We will begin looking for the next chancellor and will find the right person for the campus; students, faculty and staff; and the city of Eunice."

In addition to chancellor, Nunez serves as professor of biology at LSUE. Prior to coming to LSUE in August 1996, Nunez served as vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of biology at Indiana University, Kokomo, Ind. from 1992 to 1996; as dean of liberal arts and sciences and professor of biology at Missouri Western State University, St. Joseph, Mo., from 1983 to 1992; as chairperson and professor of the Department of Biology and Health Sciences, University of Detroit, Detroit, Mich., from 1973 to 1983; and as assistant and associate professor of biology at University of Detroit from 1970 to 1973.

Nunez received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in 1965 and 1967 from LSU, and his Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of North Texas in Immunology/Microbiology.
Author of more than 30 professional publications in the areas of Microbiology/Immunology and academic administration, Nunez is the past president and past member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of University Administrators, or AAUA. He is also listed in American Men and Women of Science and Who's Who in America/Midwest.

Nunez is a member of several professional academic/scientific societies, such as Sigma Xi, is a past recipient of the National Science Foundation's Professional Science Faculty Development Award and was a NASA-Ames/Stanford University, ASEE Senior Faculty Research Awardee and the SIFE "University President of the Year." Nunez has also served as PI/Director for more than 15 basic research grants in Immunology and Microbiology and academic program grants and awards.
Nunez was the first recipient of the Mayor's Award for Volunteerism in the Arts, in St. Joseph, Mo., in 1992. He is a past president of Eunice Rotary Club, a "Rotarian of the Year" awardee, as well as a "Paul Harris Fellow" award recipient. Nunez also is past board member of the St. Landry/Evangeline Parish United Way; the Eunice Community Health Clinic; and the St. Landry Parish Literacy Coalition.

He was a member of the Acadiana Regional Development board; the Enterprise Consortium of the Gulf Coast; the Eunice Chamber of Commerce; the St. Landry Parish-Opelousas Chamber of Commerce; and the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Acadiana Medical Center. He was the 2006 recipient of the Eunice "Citizen of the Year" award, as well as the 2006 Lifepoint Hospitals national "Board Leadership Award." Nunez was also honored through his inclusion in "Legendary Locals of Eunice" for his community involvement and service.

Nunez is married to Adele H. Nunez, who is an educator with past service as an elementary teacher and school principal. She currently is a reading program coach for Acadia Parish Schools. Nunez and his wife have two children and three grandchildren.

LSU Eunice is located just southwest of Eunice along Louisiana Highway 755 in Acadia Parish, near the boundaries of Evangeline and St. Landry Parishes, in a rich and fertile section of Southwest Louisiana referred to as "the tri-parish area." LSU Eunice is committed to the principle that individuals should have the opportunity to develop themselves through education commensurate with their capabilities and interests. To this end, the university strives to provide educational programs and related services which reflect and respond to the diversified interests, aptitudes, talents, needs and goals of its constituency. Upcoming Performances

Poet Odd?Rodd and Country Singer Kevin Mac are coming to the LSU Eunice campus in separate performances over the coming weeks. Odd?Rodd will perform at noon in the Union on Friday, February 6, and Kevin Mac will perform at 6:30 p.m. in the Health Technology Auditorium on Wednesday, February 11. Both events are free to LSU Eunice students. Kevin Mac tickets are $4 for non-students.

Odd?Rod's poverty-stricken upbringing has turned into the very tool he needed to grab and inspire anyone who hears him. He chased his education despite his surroundings and earned himself an academic scholarship to UNF where he started his own open-mic show. Now he tours college campus and has been voted the Association of Promotional Campus Activities 2014 Spoken Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. The Campus Activities Board is sponsoring the event. This will be Odd?Rod's second visit to LSU Eunice.

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Kevin Mac wins audiences over immediately as he explodes on stage with his exuberant personality. Although his roots are in country music, and his original music is decidedly country, Kevin is far from a one-trick pony; he loves to surprise audiences with his own spin on hip hop, classic rock and sometimes even a boy band hit or two. Kevin coined the term "Southern Swag" to describe his unique brand of music. According to Kevin, "Southern Swag is a cool country sound where hip-hop and country styles combine to create a fresh, sexy vibe." The LSU Eunice Performing Arts and the Louisiana Presenters Network is sponsoring Kevin. Tickets are free to LSU Eunice students and $4 to anyone from off campus.

Author to Speak March 13

Chere Dastugue Coen will be speaking about her latest book, "Forest Hill, Louisiana: A Bloom Town History," at noon Friday, March 13, in the Louisiana Room of the Arnold LeDoux Library on the LSU Eunice campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

Her book covers the history of Forest Hill, a town of about 800 people near Alexandria

In the early days, the community was a summer retreat for plantation owners. The lumber industry rolled into town with the railroad, which eased the transportation of virgin timber. By 1901, the nurseries had emerged after Samuel Stokes began selling a variety of plants from his woods. Today, more than two hundred nurseries are in operation, many by the families who founded them.

It is home to the annual Louisiana Nursery Festival in March and was once home of Camp Claiborne, home to the largest peacetime war maneuvers in U.S. history and training ground for half a million soldiers during World War II.

LSUE, LSUA Sign Agreement

0
0

LSU Eunice and LSU of Alexandria have reached an agreement allowing students in certain 2 plus 2 programs to transfer seamlessly between the two institutions.

This 2 plus 2 agreement allows students who earn an associate's degree at LSUE in three selected programs to complete the related bachelor degree at LSUA. The LSUE programs include an Associate of Science in Nursing (RN), Associate of Science in Management and Associate of Science in Criminal Justice.

Students who choose to continue their education in nursing at LSUA will enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) program.

Those who earn an associate's degree in Criminal Justice may pursue a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from LSUA.

However, LSUE students who earn an Associate of Applied Science in Management will have two choices in continuing their education. These students will be able to choose between a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Elder Care Management from LSUA.

Additionally, LSUE graduates will not need to relocate to finish their bachelor degree. The selected LSUA programs associated with this agreement will be offered 100% online.

"With these two exciting collaborations, LSU Eunice and LSU of Alexandria are providing accommodating mechanisms for students to either initiate and/or complete their undergraduate education at their own home campus," said LSU Eunice Chancellor William Nunez. "In doing so, we are enhancing both the number of Louisianan's with college degrees, as well as, the economic opportunities which these credentials provide - all while meeting the local workforce needs."

This agreement will also alleviate any fears that earned hours will not transfer toward the additional degree.

"With the articulation agreements in place, students who want to pursue a bachelor's degree will know how the courses that they are taking for the associate degree at LSUE will count toward their degree at LSUA," says LSUA Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Barbara Hatfield.

If a student decides to pursue a bachelor's degree, twenty-five percent of the degree's requirements must be completed through the LSUA program in order for LSUA to confer the degree.

In order to be eligible, students must complete the selected associate degree from LSUE and meet the bachelor's program admission requirements set forth by LSUA.

13th Edition of LA Review Released

The thirteenth edition of "The Louisiana Review," a magazine featuring poetry, short stories, essays, reviews, plays and art has been published by the Division of Liberal Arts on the LSU Eunice campus.

The Louisiana Review is an art and literary journal published yearly. Fiction, poetry, and black & white art by Louisiana authors are featured in the publication, as well as Louisiana and Southern U.S.-themed pieces from contributors around the country and the world.

"We try to highlight Louisiana authors or artists, and we're proud to have a poem by Sue Own, former LSU Poet-in-Residence and author of ‘The Devil's Cookbook' and ‘My Doomsday Sampler,' in this issue," said Dr. Billy Fontenot, editor of the journal and professor of English at LSU Eunice.

Fontenot is the editor, while Dr. Diane Langlois, associate professor of English served as this issue's art editor and Dr. Jude Meche, assistant professor of English, is the "Review's" poetry editor.

The new edition contains fiction from Lake Charles novelist Norman German, as well as stories from younger authors like Daniel Webre and Corey Doiron.

"It's always fun to publish great work by beginning authors, then later see them publish novels or poetry collections on a national scale, which has happened several times with past contributors," said Fontentot.

For those who like military/spy/action novels, this issue has a chapter from Dr. Randy Esters's book, "China Spring: The Season of Death."

Poets in the thirteenth edition include Joey Brown, Maura Gage Cavell, Stella Nesanovich, Gary Lundy, Howard Winn, Bonny Barry Sanders, Jeffrey Alfier, Patricia Gray, Jaleh Kazemi, Jeannette Barnes, and David Atwood.

"We've got artwork from Ray Istre of Crowley, Joshua Chambers of Bossier Parish, Mia Kaplan of LaCombe, Jerry Keeton of Leesville, Rosemary Goodell of Baton Rouge, and New York's Bob McNeil," said Fontenot. "Well-known New Orleans folk artist Andrew LaMar Hopkins contributed a beautiful piece called ‘Baltimore Free Woman of Color,' and other New Orleans artists Leroy Gray and Adam Hall are featured as well."

The edition has two pieces of pencil art from Keith LaCour, of Libuse, Louisiana.

Copies of the Review are $5, available from the editor, 337-550-1315 or by sending a check for $8 for the cost of the book and shipping to The Louisiana Review, P.O. Box 1129, Eunice, LA 70535.

Information on submitting contributions for the 2016 issue is included in the current issue and can be viewed at www.lsue.edu/la-review.

LSU Eunice and other organizations in St. Landry Parish have teamed up to tell their upbeat stories in a coordinated branding campaign called "We're Moving Forward."

"We're going to start telling the good stories about St. Landry Parish," Bill Rodier, director of St. Landry Economic Development, proclaimed during an open house and reception to kick off the campaign.

The nine organizations include the parish government, the parish tourist commission, St. Landry Parish Schools, the solid waste commission, the sheriff's department, the St. Landry Chamber of Commerce, South Louisiana Community College T.H.Harris Campus, and LSU Eunice.

The collaboration rolled out their branding and good news website, www.slpforward.com , where readers can view ‘good news' about the nine organizations.

"What's good for St. Landry Parish is good for the region, and what's good for the region is good for St. Landry Parish," said Parish president Bill Fontenot. "I often hear that from (Lafayette city-parish mayor) Joey Durel's mouth, only he uses Lafayette Parish."

Rodier said "Moving Forward" signs of various sizes, including a billboard along I-49, will be visible in the parish within days.

On Monday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m., Ken Waldman will join some of his favorite Cajun performers for an evening of music, poetry and storytelling. The performance will be held in the auditorium of the Health Tech Building on the LSU Eunice campus. Tickets are free to all students with their student I.D. and $4 for general admission.

Waldman is no stranger to LSU Eunice having entertained students before on numerous trips to campus. Waldman uses his music in performances as a backdrop as he shares original poems-poetry often about this music and tells stories, most often about the music or about Alaska.

When Waldman performs, he invites local accompanists who are the highest level musicians themselves to join him on stage.

LSU Eunice Performing Arts Series is funded through the help of recycling projects on campus and the assistance of the university's Campus Activities Board.

Respiratory Care is a health specialty involving the treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. These patients may be found in the newborn nursery, the surgical and medical units, the emergency department, the outpatient department, intensive and critical care units, in extended care and skilled nursing facilities, and at home.

Over the last few years, the role of respiratory care professionals has expanded greatly. It is anticipated that the need for respiratory therapists in all health care settings will grow 40% in the next 8 years. Therapists are also needed to serve on multidisciplinary teams within the health care environment. For these and many other reasons, we anticipate the need for therapists with multiple skills to increase. Respiratory therapists can go on to become managers, administrators, supervisors, and educators.

Governor Jindal Honors Veterans, Designates 24 Louisiana Colleges as Military and Veteran Friendly Campuses

Governor Jindal highlighted campuses across Louisiana for going above and beyond to create a supportive environment for veteran and military students by designating these universities as a "Governor's Military and Veteran Friendly Campus." This designation was included in Governor Jindal's 2015 Legislative Package and it assists veterans in selecting which Louisiana institution best fits their needs.

LSU Eunice was one of the universities selected by the governor as a Military Friendly Campus. LSUE has been named to the list for five consecutive years.

With over two million veterans returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, it is important that Louisiana's two and four-year schools support military men and women by helping them get a quality education. In order to seek a Governor's designation, state schools must offer admissions policies and academic and student support services tailored to military and veteran students signifying their willingness to assist service men and women in meeting their educational goals. Some of the criteria for receiving the designation include specialized orientation sessions, application fee waivers, readmission policies after return from deployment, priority class scheduling, veteran-specific courses, career workshops, and adoption of the veterans articulation transfer process.

Governor Jindal said, "Today, it is fitting that we recognize the Louisiana universities that have worked to ensure that our military and veteran students have access to the educational support they deserve when they return home from service. These servicemen and women are dedicated leaders who have given their all to protect our country, and we celebrate them, their families and all of our veterans today for their unending dedication to our great country. Our military members have made tremendous sacrifices to serve the American people throughout the years, and today is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our local heroes."

All four LSU campuses were designated as a "Governor's Military and Veteran Friendly Campus":

Delagado Class Donates to Fund

A delegation from Delgado Community College in New Orleans donated $2,050 to a scholarship in memory of former LSU Eunice Radiologic Technology student, Mayci Breaux.

The group from the Delgado Radiologic Technology program visited campus to present the funds to the LSUE program. Katie May and Lauren Ory, co-presidents of the radiologic technology class at Delegado spearheaded the fundraising. She said students sold $1 tickets for about three weeks in a raffle of a basket of NOLA-themed items that included certificates to restaurants, tickets to local venues such as the World War II Museum and New Orleans Saints items.

Breaux was one of two people killed in July at the Grand 16 movie theater in Lafayette. After the shooting, the LSUE Foundation established the Mayci Breaux Memorial Scholarship in memory of Breaux, who was in her first year of the rad tech program at LSU Eunice.

May, a St. Thomas More High School graduate, and others in the Delgado class had just attended a state-wide radiologic technology conference and had met the LSU Eunice students. After the July shooting, the Delgado class realized they had met Breaux at the conference, and they decided they wanted to help.

After raising funds for the scholarship, the Delgado classes wanted to present the check to the LSU Eunice class, and the two groups met Friday. Carleen Boudreaux, radiologic technology program director at Delgado, said the fundraising for the scholarship would be ongoing.

Madelaine Landry, LSUE Foundation executive director, said an annual scholarship of $1,000 is the current goal for the Mayci Breaux Memorial Scholarship for a radiologic technology student at LSUE. This year $5,000 has been raised for the scholarship.
