LSU Eunice to Break Ground on Classroom Building

EUNICE, LA - Louisiana State University Eunice will break ground on its new $7.4 million classroom building on Thursday, September 23.

The 45,000-square-foot facility, designed to accommodate the University's Continuing Education program and additional classrooms to meet the demands of LSU Eunice's growing population, is expected to be completed in the spring of 2012. It will be located between the Health and Physical Education Building and Manuel Hall. Construction is expected to begin this month.

The two-story building will contain lecture halls, auditoriums, tech labs, classrooms, faculty and staff offices, and will be the new home for Office of Continuing Education and the Office of Information Technology.

LSU Eunice received the funds for construction of the building in March 2009 when Governor Bobby Jindal used $98.4 million from the 2007-2008 fiscal year surplus to fund capital outlay projects at two-year and four-year higher education institutions across Louisiana.

"The construction of a new Classroom/Community Education Building for LSU Eunice represents the fulfillment of a capital outlay need that the campus initially requested in 1991," said Chancellor William Nunez. "It is a project which will provide the campus with much needed classroom spaces to accommodate the continued growth of LSU Eunice's student population, while also providing specialized spaces for adult 'rehirement' and enrichment education as part of St. Landry's effort to develop many of the parish's communities into friendly/supportive and educationally-interesting places for retirees to relocate."

Expected to make remarks at the ceremony are LSU System President John V. Lombardi, LSU Eunice Chancellor William Nunez and State Representative Mickey Guillory.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. near the construction site next to the Health and Physical Education Building on the south side of the campus. The event is open to the public.

EUNICE - Enrollment for the fall 2010 semester at Louisiana State University Eunice was up three percent over the fall of 2009, according to final regular fall semester enrollment figures released by the university's registrar's office.

Enrollment is 3,431 students, setting a record for the university's all-time enrollment. The previous top enrollment record was 3,332 students set last fall.

"The Fall of 2010 student enrollment at LSU Eunice grew by nearly three percent reflecting the confidence which students and their families have in the campus and it's programmatic quality," said LSU Eunice Chancellor William Nunez.

LSU Eunice reported having 2,236 first-time freshman, 644 sophomores (30 plus credit hours) and 551 unclassified students, which include students with more than 60 credits.

Students from 57 parishes are enrolled in LSU Eunice classes, including off-campus classes.
