Summer Study Abroad Program 2011 in Canada

A group of LSU Eunice students and language professor Dr. Olivier Chatelain participated in the university's first Study Abroad French Immersion in the Francophone city of Montreal, Canada, this summer.

The students arrived in Montreal, Quebec in early July and took possession of their individual apartments in the St. Cathy's luxury student residence in the heart of the city. They met with fellow students from McGill, Concordia and UQUAM universities who lodged in the same residence building.

For the remaining month, the students attended three hours of class every morning, took an exam every Friday and completed a comprehensive final exam at the end of the course.

The first weekend was spent by the students getting acquainted with the city and its public Metro transportation which they took to their first French class on the Plateau du Mont Royal neighborhood. Chatelain, the organizer and founder of the LSU Eunice Study Abroad Program, greeted the students at the immersion class, where they signed the contract/pledge to speak only French for the next four weeks.

Students spent the mornings in French class and in the afternoons, they were assigned cultural activities in French that were discussed in class the following morning.

As part of the cultural activities, they took a tour in a double-decker bus of the city of Montreal, visited old Montreal with a tour of the City Hall and Cathedral Notre Dame, shopped along Boulevard St Denis, and spent an afternoon at the beach in the Park Jean Drapeau on Island St. Helene.

The group also visited the underground city and the third largest North American city of the dead at Cemetery Notre Dame on Mont Royal; the Red Path Museum at McGill University (the Canadian Harvard); the Montreal's Fine Art Museum and a special exhibit by French Fashion designer Jean-Paul Gauthier; the biosphere, an architectural structure offered by the United-States to the city of Montreal for the International Exhibition of 1967 and converted today in an environmental museum; the Oratory St Joseph; the Lachine Museum, a 400 years old and oldest construction on the island of Montreal devoted to early life in the settlement; and they took a cruise on the St Laurent River aboard cruise ship "Cavalier Maxim".

During the evenings, they lived a lifestyle similar to other Canadian and international students. They did their grocery shopping and cooked in the common kitchen of the residence hall. They went to festivals, ate at fine restaurants, caught a show at the cinema, and rode bicycles around the city with their Bixi Bicycle passes.

The last weekend before returning to Louisiana, The LSU Eunice students were invited to a French Quebecquoise family reunion, where they were able to practice their language skills and socialized with the family members. The students commented that the Quebecquoise family reunion was very similar to the family reunions existing in Southwestern Louisiana.

The understanding and oral level of French of the LSU Eunice Students participating in the French Immersion Study Abroad Program went from non or limited comprehension on day one of the immersion, to understanding of the language when spoken at regular pace with a good capacity to answer in French. Chatelain noted that his students can now hold conversations in French and talk with their Louisiana French speaking relatives.

"This unique experience had been perceived as intellectually broadening and life changing for the students," said Chatelain. "Some of them have already expressed a desire to participate in the university's Summer Study Abroad Program 2012 that will take place during June 2012 in Montreal and July 2012 in France."

The French Immersion Study Abroad Program is listed as French 2300 in the academic catalog and is a four credit course.
For more information on LSU Eunice's Summer Study Abroad Program 2012 in Montreal or France contact Dr. Olivier Chatelain at ochatela@lsue.edu and (337) 550-1272 or Dr. Luciane Berg at lberg@lsue.edu and (337) 550-1308.

The LSUE Foundation and Friends of the LeDoux Library, in partnership with LSUE Continuing Education, are sponsoring a documentary film presentation of the "Queen of the Sun" on Wednesday, August 31, 5:30-7:30pm. A meet-and-greet will start at 5:30pm; film starts at 6pm; it is free and open to the general public.

The issues in this film are of great interest to gardeners, bee keepers, farmers and any member of the general public who enjoys eating FOOD.

Additional presentations of the film will be available in our many supportive communities in Acadiana in September and October. By taking the film "off campus," the LSUE Foundation hopes to promote the educational mission of LSU Eunice, find some of our lost LSU Eunice alumni and conduct a brief survey on potential future continuing education classes we can offer at or through LSU Eunice.

LSU Eunice will be opening its newest building, the Continuing Education classroom building, in September 2012. We anticipate offering many interesting courses to those who express an interest in these issues; courses could include items such as beekeeping, container gardening, herb gardening, growing sprouts, etc.

We would like to thank the following locations and sponsors for their support of this LSUE Foundation event in the Acadiana region:

• Louisiana State Arboretum in Ville Platte, Thursday, 9-08 at 6PM, sponsored by Eric Gil, State Farm, Ville Platte.
• Jean Lafitte Cajun Prairie Cultural Center in Eunice, Wednesday, 9-14, 5PM, sponsored by Le Village, Pucheu, Pucheu and Robinson and John Guillory, Allstate, Eunice.
• St. Landry Tourist Information Center in Opelousas, Saturday, 9-17 at 1PM, sponsored by St. Landry Homestead, Eunice and Opelousas.
• Pack and Paddle in Lafayette, Thursday, 9-22, 7PM, sponsored by Pack and Paddle.
• Crowley Rice Theater in Crowley, Wednesday, September 28, 6PM, sponsored by Landry's Feed in Crowley and Rayne and Harmon's Greenhouse Nursery.
• Tupper Museum in Jennings, Tuesday, October 25, 6PM, sponsored by St. Martin Bank, Jennings Garden Club and Drs. Richard "Chip" and Charice Hebert.

The LSUE Foundation announced the creation of a new Honors Program course for LSU Eunice sophomore Honors students that combines community service and leadership training. The course, HNRS 2300, places qualified students in internship positions with area non-profit agencies. Funding for the program has been provided by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Shea of New Iberia. Jerry Shea is a former member of the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Students are assigned to a local organization to intern while familiarizing themselves with its mission, goals, and operation. They are encouraged to offer recommendations to the organizations with the purpose of improving their community impact. To earn credit in the course, weekly diaries are required detailing the experience. An assigned faculty member monitors the student's activities.

Honors Program Director, Dr. Maura Cavell is excited about the new course's potential. "It is our hope that our Honors Program students will demonstrate achievement of skills in problem-solving and decision-making, communication, ethics, social conscience and responsibility, as well as social interaction, and professional development through this program, "she said.

The concept is one which LSU Eunice Chancellor, Dr. William Nunez, is quite familiar. He worked at implementing a similar program over twenty five years ago when he served as Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Missouri Western State University. Following three years of budget cuts to many of the LSU Eunice academic programs, he encouraged Dr. Cavell to work with the LSUE Foundation to start a similar program. He helped secure the funding in an effort to spur further student success.

Keely Bell, LSU Eunice pre-med student, was the first Honors Program recipient to be placed this summer at the Eunice Community Health Care Clinic: "My overall experience at the Community Health Center was great. I am so glad that I was given the chance to participate in this program. It was a good way to experience both the pharmaceutical and clinical side of things, and I have learned so much over these past 7 weeks," said Bell.

For additional information about the program, regional non-profits can contact the LSUE Foundation at 337-550-1257 or foundation@lsue.edu.

Enrollment Numbers Fall After Record Setting Year

EUNICE - Enrollment for the fall 2011 semester at Louisiana State University Eunice was down over the fall of 2010, according to final regular fall semester enrollment figures released by the university's registrar's office.

Enrollment is 2,982 down from the record-setting enrollment of 3,431 students set in the fall of 2010.

"Over the past five years prior to Fall 2011, LSU Eunice had accrued nearly a 20 percent enrollment increase," said LSU Eunice Chancellor William Nunez. "And, therefore, many of these students who went or returned to college during the initial time of this country's recession have re-entered the workforce once again."

The economic recession facing the state and country produced economic hardship for families trying to send their children to college. LSU Eunice experienced an above average number of students unable to provide down payments on their tuition to keep their registration current while waiting for their federal financial aid to be processed.

"So, clearly, the continuing recession, and the notable impact which it has already had on our impoverished service region, identifies as one of the major reasons for our campus' drop in enrollment numbers," said Nunez.

The dramatic cutback in state funding for Dual Credit has affected LSU Eunice's enrollment for the fall. Cutbacks resulted in an overall loss of about 300 high school senior enrollees at LSUE compared to those registered by the campus last year.

LSU Eunice reported having 1,909 first-time freshman, 613 sophomores (30 plus credit hours) and 460 unclassified students, which include students with more than 60 credits.

Students from 47 parishes are enrolled in LSU Eunice classes, including off-campus classes. Parishes with 20 or more students attending the university this fall are St. Landry, 781; Acadia, 524; Evangeline, 391; Lafayette, 308; Rapides, 169; Vermilion, 103; Iberia, 95; St. Martin, 92; Jeff Davis, 91; Allen, 65; Calcasieu, 58; St. Mary, 35; St. Tammany 34; East Baton Rouge, 34; and Avoyelles, 28.

LSU Eunice currently has 1,472 full-time students (those student carrying academic loads of 12 semester hours or more) and 1,510 part-time students.

CALL Promotes New Online Readiness Assessment

LAFAYETTE - The Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana, sponsored by the Louisiana Board of Regents, is releasing a new online assessment tool that provides a comprehensive look at online learning readiness for each adult learner who accesses and uses the tool.

LSU Eunice and five other state university offer online degrees for Louisiana adult learners interested in returning to college to finish their degrees. CALL is a joint initiative between the Louisiana Board of Regents and the Southern Regional Education Board aimed at making it easier for Louisiana adults to enroll at a Louisiana public college or university and earn a degree.

The SmarterMeasure Assessment is more comprehensive readiness tool than the instrument previously used by CALL. The purpose is to give an overview and provide recommendations for potential adult students.

Potential learners can take the self-assessment by using login information provided on the www.yourCALLla.org site. Assessment results are emailed to the potential adult student to use in preparing for returning to the college. Through research conducted last year through a partnerships with the LSU Life Course and Aging Center, CALL staff learned that a readiness assessments for online and college learning are experiences desired by prospective adult learners.

"Adults are experienced shoppers. They are returning to college for fulfillment first and job eligibility second, but also to improve their own skills. It is imperative to give them a way to assess their current skills," said Luke Dowden, Executive Director of the Center for Adult Learning in Louisiana. "Adults are investing their own financial resources for the most part. We want to ensure Louisiana's potential adults students can have some comfort in their decision with targeted guidance for how they can be more successful."

The SmarterMeasure tool will test a user's understanding of their own personal skills and environment, reading and typing abilities, technical competency, and finally technical knowledge. The tool will then give an overview of the test taker's abilities and how it relates to online learning.

"Overall, it is an impressive tool that acts as a barometer for adults looking to gauge their readiness and fit for online learning. It addresses key competencies and stylistic factors that can make a significant difference to the educational success of an adult learner," said Dr. Tracey Rizzuto, lead research partner from the LSU Life Course and Aging Center.

LSU Eunice offers two online degree programs. Students can earn fast-track associate degrees in Criminal Justice and Fire and Emergency Services.

Prospective students can take the test found at: http://www.yourcallla.org/advise_yourself
