Jazz and Blues music will headline the Spring 2012 LSU Eunice Performing Arts Series.  The Series will bring to the campus Shreveport jazz artist Jackie Greggs, and National Blues Hall of Fame member Doug Duffey.

Greggs, along with her jazz ensemble, will appear on the stage of the Health Technology Building on the LSU Eunice campus February 6.  The performance will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Greggs loves to perform duos with her vocals with the melodic strings of an acoustic guitar, or upright bass. This elegant combination allows the beautiful timbre of her voice to melt into the lushness of each note that she releases. These musical duos are "ear candy" for the listener.   Tickets for the event are $4 for general public and free to LSU Eunice students and children 12 years of age and under.

Duffey will perform at LSU Eunice March 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Health Technology Building auditorium.  Tickets for the event are $4 for general public and free to LSU Eunice students and children 12 years of age and under.  Duffey was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame and the National Blues Hall of Fame where he was named Louisiana Ambassador of the Blues.  The Monroe, Louisiana native has written songs for and recorded with George Clinton, Funkadelic, Rare Earth, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Keith Richards, Herbie Hancock, David Byrne, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Anders Osborne, Little Queenie, Marcia Ball, Zakiya Hooker, Jerry Beach, and John Autin, to name a few.  Onstage, he serves up a steaming hot & spicy gumbo of Louisiana soul, whether solo or with his International Soul Band.

Louisiana State University Eunice and its Francophone Canadian partners, Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and Centre de la Francophonie des Ameriques , will be hosting a series of conferences on French-speaking education in environments where French is the minority language.

Students, educators and members of the community are invited to attend the free conference at LSU Eunice. The local conference will be held on Friday, Feb. 17 at LSU Eunice in Manuel Hall Room 208, from noon to 1 p.m.  And earlier conference will be held in Lafayette.  It will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lafayette South Regional Library, 6010 Johnston St., Lafayette.

Keynote speaker will be Dr. Julie Rocque of the University Saint Boniface of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"In an environment where parents have two distinct backgrounds, one purely anglophone and one Francophone (French, Belgian, Cajun, Ceole, etc), the students have a different profile than those of mainstream America. This generates educational challenges, that teachers, school and parents have to assess," said Dr.Olivier Chatelain de Pronville, French instructor at LSU Eunice.  "Dr. Rocque will present the Canadian socio-cultural mandate of Francophone education in minority language settings and will explore the supports and structures existing to foster strong partnerships between schools, parents and community."

Enrollment Shows Signs of Improvement

EUNICE - Enrollment for the spring 2012 semester at Louisiana State University Eunice was down from the spring 2011 semester, but showed positive signs that the enrollment slippage last year may have slowed, according to final regular spring semester enrollment figures released by the university's registrar's office.

Enrollment is 2,972 students. LSU Eunice's enrollment for Spring 2012 semester was only 0.3 percent down from the Fall of 2011 enrollment of 2,982.

"Traditionally spring enrollments are always less than those in the fall," said LSU Eunice Chancellor William Nunez. However the limited decline of 0.3 percent from Fall to Spring in academic year 2011-2012 was the least drop recorded over the past several years."

LSU Eunice experienced drops of 4.5 percent between semesters in the 2010-2011 academic year, 2.9 percent in 2009-2010, and 2.5 percent in 2008-2009.

"This data demonstrates that the campus' efforts to enhance both its student retention and recruitment success are beginning to have a measurable impact," said Nunez.

The largest single area of improvement in enrollment came from an increase in students in East Baton Rouge Parish in the Early Start Program at University High. The Early Start program allows students in high school to earn college credit through LSU Eunice.

"In addition, the campus also demonstrated improved success in its efforts to increase Early Start participants from area high schools, with the largest single area of enrollment increase coming from the addition of the 121 students at the LSU A&M's University High," said Nunez

The early start program allows students in high school to get a jump start on their college education by the earning of college credit through LSU Eunice.

Students from 53 parishes are enrolled in LSU Eunice classes, including off-campus classes. Parishes with 20 or more students attending LSU Eunice this fall are St. Landry, 658; Acadia, 400; Lafayette, 236; East Baton Rouge, 149; Evangeline, 149; Rapides, 121; Iberia, 91; Vermilion, 87; Jeff Davis, 71; St. Martin, 68; Allen, 50; Calcasieu, 49; Avoyelles, 33.

According to NSU President Dr. Randall Webb and LSU Eunice Chancellor William J. Nunez III, the 2 plus 2 agreement is designed to improve the transfer and advising process for students.

Under the agreement, Northwestern State will provide consultation to LSU Eunice regarding required content for the 2 plus 2 curriculum and receive and maintain Intent to Transfer forms from LSU Eunice students and honor the agreement regarding the academic catalog in effect on the student's date of signature and the Northwestern State confirmation signature. Northwestern State will accept credit hours from LSU Eunice as listed in the agreement and provide information about the agreement in the university catalog. The LSU Eunice Diagnostic Medical Sonography department recently received a FAST Exam Real Time Ultrasound training model through a Louisiana Community and Technical College System Rapid Response Grant.

The new model is the first fully imageable Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) ultrasound training model that offers superb realism. Students will experience outstanding ultrasound imaging characteristics of the structures in the thorax, right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, abdomen, and pelvis while encountering the same imaging challenges as found in a human patient such as applying the adequate transducer pressure in order to obtain images, bowel gas and intercostal access.

Pictured with the new equipment are DMS students Jull Usie of Breaux Bridge, Julie Nguyen of Marrero and Kristie Broussard of Lafayette.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography at LSU Eunice is a one-year certificate program. More information can be found www.lsue.edu/dms .

All three atlethic teams at LSU Eunice were named to the Academic Teams of the Year list by the NJCAA. This list is composed of the teams with the top GPA in each sport.

The minimum grade point average requirement for consideration is a team GPA of 3.00.

Baseball and Basketball each made the list with an average GPA of 3.17, while Softball was added to the list after finishing with a 3.15 GPA.

Over 450 teams qualified for academic team accolades. Nearly 60,000 student-athletes competed in the NJCAA for the 2011-2012 academic year on more than 3,500 teams in 28 different sports.

The 2011-2012 season marks the 29th year the NJCAA has recognized the success of its student-athletes in the classroom. With minimal changes, the NJCAA academic awards program has been in place since 1983.
