0

The 2012 URSI Poster Symposium will be held in the Louisiana Room of the LeDoux Library on Friday, September 28. Doors will open at 11:30am for poster viewing. Presentations by the teams will start promptly at NOON.

URSI, the Undergraduate Research Summer Institute, has been part of the LSU Eunice campus since being introduced by Chancellor William Nunez over fifteen years ago. Students at a two-year college are offered an opportunity to work with a faculty mentor on valuable research initiatives.

"URSI has enabled me to look into furthering my education in the Cath Lab," noted Jade Latiolais, student Radiologer. Latiolais' project explores a new technology, the Latch Catheter, which has special appeal. It is the brainchild of her father who works at Opelousas General Hospital in the Cath Lab.

Emily Morgan, Respiratory Therapy student, also understands how beneficial the experience has been as she prepares to enter the healthcare field. "I am happy to have gotten the opportunity to research and learn so much about such a significant healthcare topic facing today's society. Since I will be graduating in December, the knowledge I have gained from working on the URSI project will be extremely beneficial to me."

Morgan and Latiolais are members of two of the four URSI 2012 teams, which include: Dr. Chad Huval and student Peyton Roteff: "Melting Investigation of Enantiomeric Mixtures;" Instructor Kathleen Warner and student Emily Morgan: "Would you like some champagne with that Sir? CMS to Base Reimbursement on Patient Satisfaction Survey Results;" Instructor Camille Lavigne and student Jade Latiolais: "New Heart Catheterization Lab Technology;" and Instructor Danielle Bertrand and student Kristi Broussard Leger: "Aortic Aneurysm Testing."

Faculty, staff, students and the public are invited to the sypmpsium to hear brief overviews of the research projects. The LSUE Foundation hosts the annual event with the support of SLEMCO, as well as private donations.

Singer and storyteller, "Riverboat John" Ferguson will kick off the 2012-13 LSU Eunice Performing Arts series on October 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Health Technology Auditorium in the Health Technology Building on the LSU Eunice campus.

Tickets are $4 for general admission. Admission is free for LSU Eunice students and for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door.

Ferguson's show features story-telling and folk music singing and playing, focusing on the steamboat era of American tall tales and folk music from the Civil War period forward. A specialty of his is Mark Twain lore and story-telling style along with the music of the period. Ferguson accompanies himself on a variety of stringed instruments including banjo, guitar and mandolin, and is an accomplished extemporaneous composer.

The New Orleans Jazz Fest review called Ferguson "One of the best roving acts we've had in a long time and we loved his original material." While the Honeywell Performing Arts Center in Indiana said, "Two standing ovations, great stories, fantastic baritone voice."

Ferguson grew up in Hunstville, Alabama, near the Tennessee River. He received his first banjo when he was 5-years-old. His mother taught him numerous folk and patriotic songs and told him stories of the sea.

He completed his degree from George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; served in the U.S. Army; traveled the world; traveled the rivers of America; rode some of the last regular scheduled passenger trains; and rode on every paddlewheel boat he could find.

He developed a style of entertainment much like that of an 1800's minstrel who would arrive in small towns to tell stories and sing songs. Ferguson's stories can best be described as "Practical-Americana" with "life-learning lessons."

The LSU Eunice Performing Arts Series continues in November when Kate Klim, a pianist, singer and songwriter, visits the campus.

For more information, please call 337-457-1510.

These Performing Arts events are sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and recycling efforts across campus.

T-Galop Director Connie Castille to Speak Nov. 2.

The Arnold LeDoux Library will host Conni Castille, director of T-Galop: A Louisiana Horse Story, at a noon-time event Friday, November 2.

Castille will talk about T-Galop, a film about the evolution of horse play and work in Louisiana.

"This equine love affair began more than 250 years ago on the first ranches of South Louisiana where Creoles became some of American's first cowboys," explains Castille. "The Creole and Cajun idea of ‘passing a good time' of course made its way into their horse culture, like the old bush track races that birthed so many great jokeys, or the Mardi Gras horseback riders, or the leisurely Creole trail rides."

Castille grew up in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy, and a Masters Degree in Folklore from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she currently teaches. Over the past few years, she has directed several award-winning documentaries on Cajun and Creole culture that have been supported by the Louisiana Division of the Arts and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.

By using the everyday to convey universal meaning, her films tend to reveal something unexpected. Her hope is that audiences leave with a new point of view, not just about Cajun or Creole culture, but about the power and worth of everyday people doing everyday things. Her films include I Always Do My Collars First (2007), Raised on Rice and Gravy (2009), King Crawfish (2010), and T-Galop: A Louisiana Horse Story (2012). The films have shown at numerous film festivals including Cannes and Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, and have garnered awards.

Magician Ran'D Shine will highlight activities at the Campus Activities Board's Halloween Bash this Wednesday, October 31, from 10:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Shine will perform in the Acadian Center at noon. He is a frequent performer at Monday Night Magic, New York's longest running off Broadway magic show and has made numerous appearances at the world famous Magic Castle.
CAB's Halloween Bash will also include music and refreshments.

Pianist-singer-songwriter Kate Klim will be the headlining performer at the next LSU Eunice Performing Arts event on November 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the campus' Health Technology Building auditorium.

Tickets for the event are free to LSU Eunice students and children under 12, and $4 for general admission. As always, tickets are available at the door.

Producer Crit Harmon, who has worked with singers like Martin Sexton, Lori McKenna and Mary Gauthier, called Klim the next Carole King.

"There I said it," said Harmon. "Not just because she writes and performs her songs on the piano, but because her songs show wisdom beyond their years, drawing on experiences from her personal life, but expanding those lessons to include a broader view on the meaning of relationships and people in our lives."

Klim has been recognized by some of the country's premier songwriting contests. She won the 2010 Kerrville New Folk competition, and was a finalist in the 2005 and 2006 Mountain Stage Newsong Contests, 2006 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, 2007 Kerrville Newfolk Competition, and 2007 Solarfest Competition.

Her newest release, "Kamikaze Love" contains her strongest songs yet, including the two than won her the New Folk competition. Produced by friend, band mate and promising new producer Brian Packer, the album is a sign that Kate is no longer trying to conform to the folk community, but rather embracing the indie-pop songwriter she has always been. The product is an honest collection of songs that Kate considers her best work yet.

This event partially funded by the LSU Eunice Campus Activities Board.

The public is invited to LSU Eunice on November 13 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for National Memory Screening Day 2012 in the campus' Community Education Building.

The event will provide free, confidential memory screenings and will help to educate the public about memory concerns and dementia. Appointments are not needed. Interested parties can arrive anytime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Screenings take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

According to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, memory screenings make sense for anyone concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning sign of dementia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; or who believe they are at risk due to a family history of Alzheimer's disease or a related illness.

Screenings also are appropriate for anyone who does not have a concern right now, but who wants to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons.

Local pharmacist Charles Feucht has joined with the LSU Eunice nursing students and the university's Office of Continuing Education to host the event and will provide participants with valuable information aiding in their understanding of the disease.

"The screenings which will take place at this community service event will go a long way in detecting those irreversible forms of dementia allowing for early intervention and treatment," said Feucht. "It will also result in the education of future caregivers who may suddenly be faced having to deal with the difficult situations that this disease presents."

The event will take place in the new Community Education Building on the west side of campus near the athletic fields.Parking is available.

For more information, please contact Feucht at 457-4604 or LSU Eunice Continuing Education at 550-1390.

Degree Planner Added to Catalog

The LSU Eunice Registrar's Office has announced a new feature in the 2012-2013 Academic Catalog that will assist in planning for a student's graduation.

"The Office of the Registrar wants to equip students to track their progression towards degree completion so they can be proactive in earning a degree from LSU Eunice," said LSU Eunice Registrar Jason Sampler. "The new ‘Degree Planner' function in our online catalog is one way we are helping students progress towards degree completion"

The Planner opens in a new web page when clicked and provides students with a check list of classes need for the degree, with a space to add in grades for each class, and with a space to fill out when the class was completed. Most planners fit on one page and are formatted to be easily printed.

The Registrar is encouraging both students and faculty to use the new function.

"We want our students to know we are here to serve and help them meet their academic objectives and we believe equipping students in this manner is a clear example of serving students," said Sampler.

The Print Degree Planner function can found at the upper right hand corner of each degree, certificate and diploma program listing in the catalog.

Study Abroad Program Expanded

$

0

LSU Eunice has expanded its study abroad program to include a venue for students learning Spanish. The program has previously focused on French students, allowing them the opportunity for advanced study of the language through a month long trip to Montreal, Canada.

Now the program has expanded so that students in Spanish classes will have the same opportunity. Director of the Study Abroad Program, Dr. Oliver Chatelain de Pronville, has added a month-long study abroad trip to San José, Costa Rica to the lineup.

"These Study Abroad Summer Programs are unique chances for students to discover the world, advance their academic levels and broaden their understanding of modern societies and the available options for choices in future studies and careers," said Chatelain de Pronville. "It is also important to know that languages should be regarded as equally essential assets to academic majors because in today's competitive work market, priority is always given to people who are proficient or fluent in more than one language."

Students can enroll in the Study Abroad Program by registering for Spanish 2300 or French 2300 in the summer of 2013. Both are four-credit courses.

In Montreal, students will study at Université du Quebec and will spend the mornings in French class and in the afternoons they will attend cultural activities.

"Students participating in the French immersion program in Montreal will be living 24 hours in French," said Chatelain de Pronville. "When not in school, they will be with interacting and living in French in the French Canadian Culture."

Chatelain de Pronville said, in the previous summer program, his students who started the program with little or no prior knowledge of French could understand the language spoken to them at a consistent pace and response in well-constructed sentences at the end of the four weeks.

In San José, students will study at the Universidad de San José.

"When not in school, [students] will be with their host family speaking Spanish and living in the Costa Rican culture," said Chatelain de Pronville.

Tuition for each of the two courses is $3400 plus a $500 refundable deposit. The tuition covers registration fees, lodging, roundtrip transportation, class materials, application and study abroad fees, insurance and admissions fees for some cultural activities.
For more information on LSU Eunice's Summer Study Abroad Program contact Dr. Olivier Chatelain at ochatela@lsue.edu and (337) 550-1272 or Dr. Luciane Berg at lberg@lsue.edu and (337) 550-1308.
